This year's Victoria Day Parade awards winners have been announced. The Roller Derby Misfits, Woodstock Christian School and Woodstock Tire Service were among the recipients at a recent Woodstock City council meeting.
WOODSTOCK - Local companies and organizations were on hand at a recent city council meeting to accept their awards in the 2019 Victoria Day parade.
The Roller Derby Misfits and the Woodstock Christian School were among this year's winners.
Misfits' participant Brooke Hynes says while they're promoting roller derby, it's great to get recognition from the community.
"We try to be as much of the community as we possibly can and we're trying to get the word of roller derby out there and fitness and friendship, and just being a part of something, and being just healthy and happy to the community. And it's awesome when the community shows us the same love as we show them and this is kind of cool."
Mayor Trevor Birtch says the organization's participation in this year's parade gives Woodstock a sense of community.
"This is what makes us truly the Friendly City. When I talk to individuals who have moved to our community from other cities and they see all different groups; the service clubs, the businesses, the schools all coming together, it really has an impact for individuals. It really gives us a sense of community and it's something that we can all be proud of."
The Victoria Day parade was held on May 20th.
Other award winners this year included the Woodstock Christian School and Woodstock Tire Service.
Melissa Carpenter was another one of the Misfits' participants in this year's parade and she says that upon receiving this award, they'll get more recognition from the community and possibly see some new members join them.
"I think it's good. Roller derby has always been a safe place for anybody of all shapes and sizes, no matter what. And getting out there so that people can see that in person is very rewarding, so I'm hoping that the community will give a little love back and we'll get a few more new people, new faces on the track."
