OPP are encouraging the public to be aware of any crimes that come with nice weather, including car thefts and break and enters.
OXFORD COUNTY - The OPP are reminding the public to be aware of thefts happening in the community.
As spring rolls around, OPP say people will be enjoying the nice weather, allowing thieves to take advantage.
Inspector of the OPP West Region and Crime Prevention Manager, Tim Clark says to keep your valuable belongings nearby, including your car keys.
"People are out and about doing farm work, they're doing garden work and raking in the backyards. It's the time of year when thieves will take advantage of certain situations of trucks along the side of the road while the farmer's out plowing the fields. Try to take the keys from the vehicles, put them in your pocket. Many leave them in the ignition, leave them under the mat in the gas tank, thieves know this, they will take advantage of that and they'll take your vehicle. Same thing around the farm yard, when you're out lock the doors, make sure the shed doors are shut."
Clark says crimes like break and enters and thefts go up this time of year.
He says to not put yourself in any sort of potential danger if you see a theft happening.
"One thing I do ask is your personal safety. Don't try to confront the people, get the best description that you can of the people, any license plate numbers but certainly don't try to confront them. And if you see anything suspicious, feel free to call the OPP and we'll come check it out."
If suspect a crime has occurred in your community, contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
