An annual tradition is about to commence in Ontario where people forget how to drive after the first snow fall.
The first blast of winter is expected to hit the region tonight with snow and ice in the forecast.
Oxford OPP are reminding drivers to take it slow and be prepared for the winter conditions. The best thing you can do is drive according to the weather conditions and leave plenty of space between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you.
Every year police respond to numerous collisions during the first snow fall because drivers are going to fast or basically forget how to drive in the winter.
OPP suggests the following tips:
- Have a winter maintenance check-up done on your vehicle.
- Tires should be in good condition. (winter tires are recommended)
- Wipers need to be in good condition and working properly. Ensure wiper fluid is topped up before you start driving.
- Clear all snow/ice from your vehicle, windows and lights so it doesn't blow onto vehicles travelling behind you.
- Use your full light system to ensure you can see and be seen.
- Drive according to the road conditions, reduce your speed.
- Carry an emergency kit including (but not limited to) a charged cell phone, blanket, flashlight and flares.
- Keep your fuel tank at more than half a tank.
- If road conditions are reported to be in poor condition, consider postponing your travel under the conditions improve.
