Police are reminding the public to not waste resources after a woman recently called 911 to test out her new phone.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Police are once again reminding the public to only call 9-1-1 in emergencies.
Recently a woman from Norfolk County called 911 because she was testing out her new phone. The woman hung up on dispatchers after telling them, she just wanted to make sure her new phone could call 911. Police sent out officers to the area where she was located but could not find the woman.
This happened just one week after a 9 year old girl in Norfolk County called 911 because her parents made her clean her room.
On average, it takes at least two officers approximately thirty minutes to respond, investigate and clear the call. This puts enormous pressure on OPP resources when officers respond to unnecessary calls that can be prevented.
The use of 911 for emergency response continues to save lives when used appropriately and the OPP want those who need urgent help to use 911. The OPP also encourages families to discuss proper use of 911 to prevent hang ups and misdials from occurring.
