WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is donating $10,000 to the Red Cross in order to help those in Fort McMurray Alberta. Earlier this month the entire city had to be evacuated due to a massive wildfire.
Mayor Trevor Birtch says it's important to help other communities in need, especially after what our community has been through in the past.
"I think people can look back to our own disaster in 1979 with the tornado and the relief that came in from the Red Cross, municipalities, individuals and groups all across the nation. It's a real testament to what community means when you live in Canada."
Councillor Connie Lauder believes it's important to help other communities during difficult times.
"I feel that it's important that we help anyone else because I am sure they would be here to help us if we were having the problems that they are having. So it think it is our duty to help when we can."
This isn't the first time Woodstock has lent a hand during times of devastation around the world. Back in 2011 the city donated $33,000 to tsunami relief efforts in Japan. Also in 2002 the city donated $750 to help flood relief and Peterborough.
The $10,000 donation to the Red Cross will be coming out of the cities Contingencies Reserve.
