Woodstock Police are reminding residents to be careful and take steps to protect their homes after dealing with 7 B&Es in the city.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are putting out a few home security reminders after responding to 7 break and enters in the Friendly City during the past week.
Most of the B&E's involved petty theft and happened because the thieves had easy access. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen offers up a few tips to protect your home from this type of crime including making sure it looks like you're always at home even when you are not.
"Having timers in your house so you have lights on, or the TV comes on, or the radio comes on at different times. It will appear that someone is actually in the home. We don't usually see people break into homes, sheds, or trailers if the person is actually home."
VanLeeuwen says you can also protect your property by locking doors with dead bolts, use sensor lights outside, lock sheds and garages. Home alarms can be effective deterrents. Always appear to be home by utilizing timers for televisions, radios and internal lights. When away get neighbours to watch your home.
And if you're going to be away for an extended period of time, you can always let the police know so they can increase patrols in the area.
