If you are going to indulge this holiday season, make sure you do so safely and responsibly.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police have noticed a spike in public intoxication recently.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says they have discovered people walking with open containers, indulging behind buildings, and even passing out in flower beds in the Friendly City. "We had one person over the weekend who actually tried to get into a residence that they thought was theirs but it actually wasn't. So you can imagine how scared the home owners were when this intoxicated person is, they think, trying to break into the home and the intoxicated person was so impaired they thought they were home. We actually had another young person who fell asleep near railroad tracks."
VanLeeuwen says they can arrest people if they are considered dangerous. "Usually when people get arrested it's for public safety. So they usually just a ticket for public intoxication but when they're arrested for being in public and walking in front of traffic and things like that we keep them in custody until they're sober - it's a $50 fine, with surcharge it's $65."
Moderation is key when it comes to enjoying an alcoholic drink. "Alcohol is a poison and I don't think people realize that if they start doing shots and they're drinking and they drink too much it can actually really affect your brain, cause you to pass out and be really sick and sometimes you need emergency services and the ambulance to come and take you to hospital to be medically treated," VanLeeuwen reminds everyone.
If you are indulging this holiday season, do so safety.
