Woodstock Police are reminding the public there is #nogoodway to use the "R" word.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police is reminding you their is no good way to say the R word.
They have signed up to become a Special Olympics, Yellow Card Ambassador. The Yellowcard campaign is a national anti bullying campaign with the mission to end the casual and negative use of the R word in everyday conversation. Woodstock Police Chief Bill Renton tells Heart FM why they wanted to enter this campaign.
"I know quite often it is unintentional, but we have to educate people that it is hurtful, it is derogatory to those people with intellectual disabilities, so we just want to with the Yellowcard to encourage people not to use that word and be a little more respectful. There are over 850,000 Canadians living with an intellectual disability in our country and the use of the R word invokes memories of being bullied endless days of being demeaned and countless times being told they are outsiders."
The yellowcard issued in soccer as a warning to an offending player-as a way of letting you know that you've crossed the line. The program is to invite change not force it. The actual yellowcard day is Thursday, October, 8 2015. This is the second year for the event. Woodstock Police challenges the rest of our community to become ambassadors at www.motionball.com/yellowcard
