50 Million Dollar Prize In Smart Cities Challenge

Oxford County is going to go head to head with other Canadian municipalities in the Smart Cities Challenge.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is going to go head to head with other Canadian municipalities in the Smart Cities Challenge.

The competition put on by the federal government encourages municipalities to conduct projects that could have meaningful outcomes for their residents. Four submissions will receive funding in the end, with the cash prizes ranging between $5 million and $50 million.

Manager of Strategic Initiatives Jay Heaman says a sub-committee will work on Oxford's application, and submit it before the April 24th deadline.

"There's so much to tell here, but you can only select two of the six focus points and so it's going to be figuring out how to frame that up in a single application."

Heaman adds Oxford has lots of great initiatives in the works, but highlights the Blossom Park affordable housing development in Woodstock.

"We believe that project could really serve as a launch pad to help link a lot of the other sustainability initiatives such as zero waste and addressing poverty by reduction of costs of living."

The 33 units within Blossom Park will be built to the passive house standard, meaning residents will save 80 to 90 percent on their heating and cooling.
