The people have spoken and they say they are not in favour of a new pharmacy in the Norwich Medical Centre
NORWICH - Norwich Township council has nixed an idea to rent out space at the Medical Centre for a new pharmacy.
CAO Kyle Kruger says staff had suggested the idea as a way to offset the costs of running the building which operates at a loss of $125,000 every year.
"Well certainly initially council received the staff information which suggested that might be an opportunity to utilize the space, drive some revenue and some additional services for the residents."
Mayor Larry Martin tells Heart FM the idea was turned aside after getting input from the community.
"I received more phone calls and emails in regards to that issue than I have in any other issue I have dealt with since being on council in 1982. The public I think is aware of what's happening, they didn't have all the facts but they made it perfectly clear that we want to keep what we've got, we don't want more because we might end up losing what we've got."
Martin says people were worried it wouldn't be fair to the existing pharmacies in Norwich to have another one at the Medical Centre.
"The biggest concern was the loss of other two pharmacies in Norwich and they felt the space that this pharmacy was going to use up could be a lot better used as some kind of medical professional or doctor of some sort to go in and use that space."
