A fake phone call caused a heavy police presence at a high school in Woodstock yesterday afternoon.
WOODSTOCK - A heavy police presence was seen in Woodstock.
Yesterday at 12:30 p.m., the Woodstock Police received reports of a weapons threat at St. Mary's Catholic High School. Officers responded in a manner consistent with the nature of the threat, which resulted in an increased police presence in the area as officers worked to ensure the safety of students and staff while the investigation was conducted.
Following an initial investigation, police determined the threat was unfounded, and the incident was an example of "swatting," a criminal hoax in which a false report is made to emergency services, typically to provoke a large-scale police response to a location where no genuine emergency exists.
The investigation into the source of the threat remains ongoing.
