For the third day in a row, SWPH has confirmed a COVID-19 related death in our region, this time a man in his 60's from Oxford County.
OXFORD COUNTY - For the the third time in as many days, Southwestern Public Health has recorded another COVID-19 related death.
The most recent death announced this morning is a man in his 60's from Oxford County.
This is the 6th death in the Southwestern Public Health Region in the past 2 weeks. None of the people who have died recently were over 80 or in a long term care facility.
Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says the one positive we are seeing right now is that the vaccines do seem to be working.
"I think the most important message is that vaccines are working. We have all of our seniors in Long Term Care Homes and Retirement Homes and other congregate settings vaccinated and we are not seeing the deaths there anymore."
Dr. Lock says most people over the age of 75 in our region have been vaccinated.
"Those who are younger, in there 60's and 70's, who have not yet had the vaccine are becoming susceptible to the virus and falling ill. I think the strongest word of advice to everyone is to get the vaccine. The vaccine doesn't always prevent you from getting the illness but if you do get it, it will be much, much milder and hopefully this way can slow the numbers down for new deaths.
A total of 75 people from the SWPH health region have died with COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic.
