Attack Bantams Take Silver

The Oxford Attack Major Bantams came away with the Bronze Medal in their division at the provincial championships this weekend in Mississauga. They got off to a solid start on Friday night by defeating the Cambridge Centaurs 34-26 in a tough defensive battle. Joshua Flanagan and Nick Keeley led the attack with 10 points each while Josh VanderKlooster and Justin Mezenberg added four each. On Saturday morning, the major bantams played their most complete game of the season and outclassed the York Stingers 59-35. The game was highlighted by two 3 pointers from Chris Cottrell and one from Justin Mezenberg. Flanagan paced the offense with 22 points including 9 of 12 from the free throw line while Keeley was also solid from the line going 7 of 9 as part of his 15 points. Ryan Lee scored his 6 points in the third quarter during a solid run for the major bantams. The attack dropped their third game to the eventual gold medalists York South Knights 54-37. Tyler Rooke played his best game all season at times beating York's tremendously aggressive press all on his own. Flanagan also played his best game of the year carving up York for 19 points while Robert Van Ryswyk and Derric Pollock chipped in four points each. The team came out flat Sunday morning in the semi-final and were handed a 57-39 loss to the eventual silver medal winning Orillia Lakers. Flanagan had 11 and Pollock 10 in the loss. Ben Mott pulled in some key rebounds and had a solid defensive effort. The Attack took a 10 point second quarter lead and never gave it up in the bronze medal game defeating Brantford Rep by a final score of 37-30. Oxford's press caused problems for Brantford for much of the game creating many turnovers. The game was highlighted by a beautiful driving left handed lay up by Kurtis Rooke through contact. Flanagan led offense once again with 18 points. Keeley added eight and Pollock had seven. The player of the tournament for the Oxford Attack major bantams was Joshua Flanagan who carried his team and on occasion some opposing players on his back throughout the entire championship weekend.
