Autopsy of Clifford Fair in Robinson Murder Trial

Autopsy details from the body of Clifford Fair were shared in the murder trial of John Robinson Thursday. Forensic Pathologist Dr. Toby Rose performed this autopsy back in November of 2008. She shared her final report with the jury including the five step process she says is used in every autopsy. It starts with learning about the body's history. Dr. Rose was shown pictures of where Fair's remains were found underground. Next is an external examination in which Dr. Rose weighed the dismembered body noting, "Mr. Fair was a very tall man during life." The body was covered in twenty pounds of dirt and after removing showed decomposition and injuries. There were ante-mortem injuries, or injuries that occurred before death, to the decapitated head as well as many post-mortem injuries to the body including a large laceration to the left thigh and dismemberment of the arms and head. Dr. Rose said overall, "Mr. Fair was a healthy man and all of his organs appeared normal." She did add however that there were some limitations when performing this autopsy because of the dismemberment and decomposition. Because of those limitations, she was unable to determine the cause of death. In a hypothetical situation, similar to prior witness testimony, Dr. Rose agreed that she could see a resemblance to death because of blunt force injuries: "In terms of the injuries I saw, this story correlates quite well." Dr. Rose was given a mannequin head to draw markings to show the jury where the lacerations appeared in the graphic autopsy photos. She was the only witness Thursday. This trial resumes Tuesday morning at 10am.
