Several business are collecting new teddy bears in memory of Alexander Flemming for the Baby Alex Teddy Bear Drive.
OXFORD COUNTY - The public is being asked to support this year's Baby Alex Teddy Bear Drive.
Alexander Fleming was only a few months old when he was killed by a drunk driver and his family has provided thousands of new teddy bears to local hospitals in his name.
Baby Alex's mother, Mary Rodrigues, has seen the positive impact this teddy bear drive has on the patients. "We are beginning our 6th year and are very excited about some new developments for this drive. Those kids are there for various reasons - they are there for weeks at a time either dealing with eating disorders, or depression so we really want to make sure we can deal with those children."
The Thanksgiving weekend marked the 7th anniversary of when Baby Alex was killed and Rodrigues is reaching out to the public to make the 6th Annual Baby Alex Teddy Bear Drive a huge success. "We are focusing more on monetary donations this year to buy products to go into the care baskets, which go to the child and youth mental health program. We did up 100 last year and they were gone by April, we feel it is a very worthy program and they're the ones that most often get overlooked."
Over 5 000 new teddy bears have been collected and Rodrigues is thankful for the many businesses that have stepped up to support her cause. "More than $10 000 has been raised we've always given care baskets every year to the Woodstock Hospital, and they always go towards the long term care program. A lot of the elderly patients no longer have family, and we want to make sure that they are still loved by the community."
Heart FM along with many other locations around the city will be collecting new Teddy Bears throughout the month of October. Those looking to provide a donation can call Mary at (519) 788-1547.
