You can't operate a kick-style e-scooter on public property in the City of Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council has decided to maintain its ban on kick-style e-scooters and to educate the public on the matter.
The motion was passed during the meeting on October 1st, after council heard a presentation from the Woodstock Police Service.
Constable Pritpal Thind says the injury and liability factor probably played a big role in the decision. He says lots of e-scooter related injuries have been reported across the province over the past year, with lots of the victims being youth between the ages of 10 and 19.
He says you won't get in trouble for owning an e-scooter in Woodstock, but you can't use it in public.
"You can have them on your private property but for any public space including trails, sidewalks, parks and roads, they are not allowed. So you are allow to buy them, people are allowed to sell them and you can ride them on private property with the property owners permission, but they are not allowed in public spaces."
Thind adds you could face a hefty fine if you're caught breaking the rules.
"The fines are steep because it's what we call a No Set Fine, so it's a range between $250 and $2,500. There's also a mandatory court date so the judge can decide where in that $250 to $2,500 range you land."
He says the Woodstock Police Service is taking an education first then enforcement approach to this, but it's all up to the officer in the moment.
Thind says the municipalities that permit e-scooters, including London, Kitchener-Waterloo and Peel Region, have very strict rules in place. They include speed limits, weight restrictions and age restrictions.
