The local high schools will go head to head to see who can raise the most money for United Way Oxford.
WOODSTOCK - It's a fun tradition for local high school students in Oxford County.
About 1,300 students from the seven local high schools will pack the Reeves Community Complex on Thursday November 5th for the United Way Student Stair Climb.
Megan Porter, the Resource Development Coordinator for United Way Oxford, says the school buses should arrive at around 9:00 a.m. that day.
"We'll play some games on the ice and we'll also walk a full lap of the arena. So each school will sit, share their school spirit, and cheer on their team while they're participating on the ice before we do the actual stair climb."
A trophy will be awarded to the school that raises the most amount of money in the end. The event raised over $40,000 last year alone and IDCI was the top fundraiser with $14,000.
The Meridian Credit Union has been a big supporter of this event for the past 11 years now. Steve Halyk, the local branch manager for Woodstock, says they offer their own prize as well.
"What Meridian does is actually gives a prize to the top fundraiser. It's not just $20, but usually the the person who raises the most money will win a small cash prize from Meridian."
Each student must pledge at least $20 in order to participate in the event.
The United Way Student Stair Climb first started in 2004 and it has raised over $519,000 since then. Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute (IDCI) has won the trophy every single year except for 2018, when Woodstock Collegiate Institute (WCI) raised the most funds.
Megan Porter and Steve Halyk stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Wednesday, October 14th. You can listen to the full interview below:
