Backroads More Dangrous Than Major Highways?

Which roads are more dangerous, the busy 400 series highways, or quiet County Roads? If you guessed the highways, you'd be wrong, according to this year's stats. Oxford OPP say out of 8 fatal collision in Oxford County this year, none of them happened on the 401 or 403. Inspector Tim Clark says that's because drivers are more apt to abide by safety rules on the highways than they are on back roads. The 8 fatals is already more than the Oxford OPP's predicted annual maximum, according to their quarterly report, delivered to Tillsonburg Council last night. Clark says they'll be patrolling county roads more in the months ahead. "There are concerns. We're continuing to be out there and targeting certain areas, through enforcement of the big 4: distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving and seat belts. We're up throughout the province, not just the county, but throughout the province, fatals are up." Officers duty hours have gone up this year leading to an increase of issued tickets. So far there has been a 40% increase in tickets dished out by the OPP. Speeding and distracted driving being the top two tickets so far in 2012.
