TILLSONBURG - The Battle of the Badges is about to return to Tillsonburg Memorial Arena!
The Oxford OPP will face off against Tillsonburg firefighters in the annual charity hockey tournament this Saturday.
Community Safety and Media Relations Constable Randi Crawford came up with the idea for the tournament three years ago, during a phone call with Sarah Barclay, the Public Educator for Tillsonburg Fire & Rescue Services.
"We were saying how we wish we could get together more often in places that are positive and not just when there is a serious call. We thought about doing a competition of some kind, so we threw around a few ideas and then thought about hockey because almost everybody loves hockey!"
They decided to always choose charity that represents the community and first responders. The event raised funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities in its first year and the Make a Wish foundation in it's second year. Constable Crawford says it will support Parkwood Institute rehabilitation program through St. Joseph's Healthcare London this year.
"Almost all of us know of someone who has had a really tragic accident who has been in the hospital in London and it's usually Parkwood where they go to rehab. As first responders, if we need rehab of any kind, that's usually where we end up as well."
The puck will drop at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, but they will also have a family free skate starting at 2:00 p.m.. Admission is by donation, but it's recommended that everyone donate $5 or more.
Tickets will be available at the door or you can e-mail Crawford at randi.crawford@opp.ca to get them in advance.
Randi Crawford called the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Monday April 20th. You can listen to the full interview below:
