September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month. Multiple events will be held to celebrate mentoring in the community, including Kick Back Night and their Big Car Show.

WOODSTOCK - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oxford County is putting on events all September to celebrate Big Brothers Big Sisters Month.

They will be planning different activities, including BBBS Day on September 18th.

Resource Development Manager Liz Wismer-Van Meer says they will have a special announcement that day as well.

"Also that night, we're really excited our really good friends at Brickhouse Brewpub are going to have a Kick Back Night for KidStock supporting both the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada and BBBS of Oxford County. So 10% of all sales from 6:00 to 9:00pm, on the 18th, are coming back to both agencies so we're really looking forward to that night."

Van Meer says to keep an eye out for their social media that day to hear the announcement.

Throughout the month, BBBS will celebrate mentoring in the community. Other events will include their Big Car Show, which will feature KidStock.

She says the car show will be for adults and children, featuring a barbecue and activities.

"Especially at the Big Car Show, this is one of the fun things we do, the littles get to judge on their favourite cars. So we have some guest judges, some of our littles come out and they also come out and help that day by selling 50/50 tickets with their big matches, and they kind of help out around that day to kind of say thanks for supporting them."

Van Meer adds BBBS month also promotes the need for volunteers and recruitment.

She says there are 100 or more children who are waiting to be matched with a mentor and people are encouraged to attend and talk to representatives that day to see where they might fit in, whether it's with one of the group programs or a traditional one-on-one match.

"It's a quick conversation, we have our recruitment tent there. You're not signing yourself up to anything by having that conversation but ask some questions. See what the commitment is about, see what program or what group might work best for you and hopefully we can get you in and see how rewarding being a mentor can be."

The Big Car Show is on September 22nd inside the parking lot at the Canadian Tire and Smart Centres in Woodstock.
