Burgess Park/Standard Tube Lands Need a Plan

195-acres of nature, trails and parkland in Woodstock needs a plan. On Wednesday night, the first step is being taken towards a Master Plan for the Burgess and Standard Tube lands. A community meeting is set for 7-8:30PM at Goff Hall in the Community Complex. Upper Thames Community Partnership Specialist Brad Hertner says they'll have photos and maps on display. He will be presenting an overview of the property in its current state. Then, he says they'll then look for public input. "Whether it's additional trails, redesigned trails, different amenities on the trails, maybe signage or more or better access points. We're really looking to see how the community uses the property and how we can improve the property over the next 10-years." The Burgess/Standard Tube lands, which encompasses a large area in the city's west end, faces different challenges. The Lions Trail on the south end of the property need to be completely reforested, after the Emerald Ash Borer invaded, forcing the city to cut down hundreds of trees. There's also some unused farm land on the north end, that's naturalizing in a way that Hertner says the Upper Thames Authority isn't fond of. Hertner says, "There's some old agricultural fields within the property that are naturalizing in a way that we don't like with some invasive and non-native species. If we're going to stop that and introduce some more native species in a way that's more productive, we're going to need a plan moving forward." If you can't make it, there's also an on-line survey to gauge public opinion. Click here to participate.
