It's a huge announcement for the CAMI Plant, it's 3000 workers, and the local economy. General Motors is pumping $250-million to the plant. What is means is a 336,000 sq. ft. building expansion to will house a new body shop, tooling and equipment. CAW Local 88 President Dan Borthwick tells Heart FM the new equipment will set the plant up for production into the future. "What we were told this morning is that this new investment is going into a flex-welding shop in the GM-CAMI facility. It will allow for a next-generation vehicle and allow us to do multiple platforms with the new flex-weld process." Borthwick says the union has not been given a timeline as to when the expansion might be complete. "We did ask about a commitment to a future product and they did not indicate what the model or the brand of next generation vehicle would be, just that there would be a future product coming here." But it does solidify future employment at the plant, as GM prepares to continue to produce vehicles out of CAMI Assembly, and Borthwick says that's good news that will permeate throughout the region. "It's good news for the members of CAW Local 88 and also the community in which we work in and live in for the near future." We'll have more on this developing story this afternoon on Heart FM News.
