Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will sanction Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Putin's chief of staff.
Trudeau announcing a third set of sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
He says these men bear the most responsibility for the attacks occurring in Ukraine.
As well, Canada is confirming its support to remove Russia from the SWIFT payment system, which is a vital part of the global banking system.
Sanctions are also being levied on Belarus and its leaders for its support of the invasion.
Fifty-seven individuals are being targeted, in addition to existing sanctions against President Alexander Lukashenko over human rights violations.
