Canada's Telecom Companies Agree to Emergency Outage Deal

Deal comes after a massive Rogers service disruption on July 8th.

Canada's major telecom companies have reached a deal to guarantee emergency roaming and other assistance in the event of a major outage.

Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says if one provider is faced with a major network outage, the other companies have committed to provide the assistance necessary so people can reach loved ones, access 9-1-1, and conduct business transactions.

On July 8th, a massive Rogers Communications Inc. service disruption took place, affecting millions of Canadians.

After the outage, Champagne gave the CEOs of several telecom companies 60 days to come up with a backup plan to avoid a similar scenario.

Champagne also says he has ordered the Canadian Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee to come up with more measures to ensure reliable telecom service across Canada.
