The first of weekly meetings will kick off in Norwich beginning at 6pm tonight at Emily Stowe Public School in Norwich
NORWICH - The public are invited to attend walk in clinics in Norwich on behalf of the Canadian Mental Health Association Oxford.
Director of Crisis and Outreach at CMHA Oxford, Lynne Wardell, explains why they chose Norwich to hold an event like this. "Just like our other smaller communities in Oxford County they don't have a lot of services available right in the centre. We wanted to remove the barriers that would exist with having to go to a different community and have it available outside of traditional business hours. Just removing any barriers of wait lists and so they can get service at the time that they want it or need it."
Wardell spoke to Heart FM about how the support has been in the other locations. "It starts out slow in the smaller communities then it grows from there as people get to know that we are there, and know what is available. We anticipate Norwich will start out slow, we started in mid-June and we have seen about 85 people so far between the 3 locations that are up and running already."
Norwich will join Tillsonburg, Ingersoll, and Tavistock who currently boast weekly meetings, and Wardell talks about who they are hoping to see tonight starting at 6pm. "It is free to attend, there is no cost, there is no limit on age we will see children right up to seniors. It doesn't have to be someone who has a mental illness or any kind of mental health diagnoses. It is for anybody in the community if they are struggling with an issue, or something is just going on in life and they just want somebody to talk to we are there." After taking a break around Christmas, Wardell is hoping the support continues to carry the weekly meetings at Emily Stowe Public School into the new year.
