Cold Alert

The first cold alert for the 2013-2014 winter season has been issued

Baby, it's cold outside!

As the temperatures flirt with -24 degrees Celsius when the the wind chill is factored in, Oxford Public Health have issued their first cold weather alert of the 2013-2014 winter season.

Even though winter doesn't officially start until next week, the temperatures are remaining well below seasonal.

Residents are reminded to take extra precaution in protecting themselves from the cold and watch for over-exposure which could cause frostbite or lead to hypothermia.

Public Health say those most at risk are older adults, infants and young children, outdoor workers, those who like outdoor sports such as skiing and hiking, and homeless persons and others who do not have shelter, proper clothing or food.

If someone is found to be suffering from hypothermia or frostbite, seek medical attention immediately by calling 911.

Again this year, Inn Out of the Cold is offering shelter to those seeking protection from the elements, every night from 7 pm to 7 am at Old St. Paul's Anglican Church on Dundas.  Those arriving after 11:00 pm must be accompanied by a police officer.
