WATERFORD - Nobody was injured after a costly fire at the Norfolk Disposal transfer station in Waterford.
Crews rushed to the scene around 7:00 am on Sunday morning. When they arrived, they found a chipper machine, worth an estimated $500,000 had caught fire. Firefighters did a great job in getting the flames under control. The fire did cause minor damage to an adjoining building and a truck, however; the fire was quickly contained and most of the damage was limited to the chipper itself.
No garbage was involved in the fire and there are no concerns at this time regarding air quality or environmental issues pertaining to the fire and it will not impact garbage pick-up in Norfolk County.
A damage estimate has not yet been firmly established but it is believed that damage will likely be set between $600,000 - $700,000.
The fire is not considered suspicious however; all fires with damages exceeding $500,000 are reported to the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and an OFM investigator will be attending later today to conduct an investigation and attempt to determine cause.
