Doctor Shortage

Oxford County will need to attract 26 doctors in the next 5 years to keep the status quo.

WOODSTOCK - Oxford County is bracing itself for a potential doctor shortage in the next few years.

Right now the County has 50 family doctors and most of them are getting up in a age with a number near retirement. It is estimated we will need to attract 26 new doctors in the area over the next five years just to keep the status quo in Oxford. With this in mind the Oxford Physician Recruitment Group has been formed. Dr. Gerry Roland spoke about some of the work the group is doing at Woodstock City Council.

"We need to get out and inform the possible candidates about the opportunities in Oxford County, and we hope our website will help with that, our activities going forward, the meeting with groups of residents and training doctors, our publicity out advertising, all those things we hope will help get our name out to the possible candidates."

Roland says they will be asking the County for $25,000 this year to help pay for the maintenance of a new web site and for advertising costs to promote Oxford to potential doctors.

"That is a very small budget, compared to what other counties are spending on recruitment of doctors, Elgin County has a full time recruiter and I don't know how much money she makes but I think she makes more than $25,000 a year."
