The farmers have started their planting this spring, which you see more farm equipment on the roads.
It's planting season in Oxford County and the local OPP are reminding motorists to watch out for farm vehicles on the road.
Constable Lisa Narancsik tells Heart FM they reminding drivers to be extra cautious by reducing speed, staying farm back from these vehicles and to only pass when it is safe to do so.
"We need to make sure that the roadways are clear and safe to do so, it makes it safe for those driving and it is safer for the farm vehicles as well."
Narancsik says farmers can also help out by making sure their lights are on one half hour before sunset and one half hour after sunrise.
"They need to make sure they have their slow moving signs on their vehicles and that they are still reflective so people can see them."
The OPP have provided some tips for when you come across farm vehicles:
- Be extra cautious by reducing your speed and staying well back from these vehicles. Farm vehicles with the slow moving sign attached to them may only travel up to 40 km/hr.
- Watch for left turns. Farm vehicles such as combines and tractors may; be longer and wider and may turn at locations that are not well marked.
- Pass only when it is safe to do so.
- Be aware when travelling over hills that there may be a slow moving vehicle on the other side
Following are some tips for farm equipment operators:
- Lights are required on farm vehicles one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise.
- Loads that overhang 1.5 meters need a red flag or marker at the extreme rear of the load.
- Slow moving vehicle signs should not be faded or covered and the reflectivity should not be deteriorated.
- Farm equipment operators must signal intended turns by electronic or manual arm signals.
