Phil Schaefer would like to serve a second term as the Mayor of East Zorra-Tavistock.
EZT - Phil Schaefer would like to bring another four strong years of results to the residents of East Zorra-Tavistock (EZT).
The Mayor has filed his nomination paperwork, so he will be running for re-election this fall.
Schaefer is grew up in Tavistock and he has deep ties to the municipality. His father served as the Clerk for Tavistock and became the Deputy Clerk for the merged municipality in 1978. Before entering the world of politics himself, Schaefer worked for Scotiabank for 38 years and spent about half of that time as the manager of the location in his hometown.
He served as a Ward 1 Councillor for EZT from 2018 to 2022, and was elected Mayor in October 2022. He says the Township has done very well financially during his first term as Mayor.
"We've posted surpluses over the last four years totaling over a million dollars. We have a very responsible council and staff as far as fiscal responsibility goes."
He was also happy to move into the new Township building in Hickson, and make council meetings more accessible through livestreaming and recording.
Schaefer says there's a lot to look forward to for the next four years with a new Fire Hall currently in the works for Hickson and plans about to begin for a new multi-use facility in Tavistock. He adds the Secondary Plan will also be in place for the next term of council.
"That basically is deciding what land we're going to bring into our Innerkip and Tavistock areas and how we're going to use that land. So that's a big thing and we've been waiting since 2021 to finally get that done."
The municipal election is scheduled for Monday, October 26th.
