Steven Van Wyk would like to serve a second term as a Ward 1 Councillor for East Zorra-Tavistock.
EZT - He's finishing his first term on East Zorra-Tavistock Council and he would like to stick around for another four years.
Steven Van Wyk has decided to run for re-election as one of the Ward 1 councillors.
He learned a lot during his first term and he also had a big focus on recreation. This included the creation of a recreation advisory committee.
"We had some input from all three wards with Innerkip, Hickson and Tavistock. They had different focuses, so they were able to give staff direction on different things the community wanted and so they could deliver on some of those. For example in Innerkip, they installed from frizbee golf poles they could play with."
He says the future is bright for township.
"We have set up a reserve fund so we can save money for a potential multi-use rec facility, so there's more recreation there. We have strong finances as a community right now, so we're almost debt free. So we want to continue that record of having healthy reserves, strong finances, while also investing in recreation."
Outside of Township Council, Van Wyk works as a quality assurance manager and technical expert for Stubbe's Precast, a role he says involves a lot of planning and decision making.
Van Wyk is also a father of two, ages six and 11, and they are both very involved in local sports. Van Wyk coaches minor soccer in the summer, and he has also coached minor hockey in recent years.
The municipal election is scheduled for October 26th.
