Southwestern Public Health is stressing the fact that COVID-19 is not the flu.
OXFORD COUNTY - One of the most common questions related to COVID-19 right now is what about influenza cases.
Southwestern Public Health gets asked this question daily. They want to make it clear that COVID-19 is not the flu. Symptoms for both may be similar and the elderly and people with prexisting conditions are susceptible to both, but they are very different viruses.
The Health Unit also provided a number of answers as to why we are not seeing a lot of influenza cases reported this year.
First and foremost, less and less people are travelling this year, meaning we did not see the influenza virus travel from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere as much as it normally would.
The use of PPE, handwashing and social distancing also play a factor in less people getting the flu this year.
Also more people got the flu shot this year, than ever before, which helped stop the flu virus from spreading before it got started.
