Hawkins Gignac Act facing final vote at the Legislature today

Oxford MPP, Ernie Hardeman's private members bill that would make carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in all Ontario homes is up for final vote today at Queen's Park.

Hardeman first introduced the bill after OPP officer Laurie Hawkins, her husband Richard and their two children died of carbon monoxide poisoning in their home in 2008.

The family did not have a C-O detector in the house.

This is the fifth time the Hawkins-Gignac Act has been before the Legislature, after it died on the order paper four times prior to this.

Hardeman says people have to realize how important it is to protect themselves against the silent killer.

Laurie's uncle, John Gignac, says they're very happy that Ontario is close to passing the law.
