Fire Prevention Week

Door to door fire alarm checks is just one part of how Woodstock Fire will mark Fire Prevention Week.

WOODSTOCK - Making sure your extension cords aren't frayed is just one thing you can do to help prevent a fire.

It is Fire Prevention Week and Woodstock Fire Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says this year's theme is 'Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Every Month'.

In 1871 there was a great fire in Chicago where over one thousand people died and 100 thousand people were displaced and since then there has been a week dedicated to fire prevention.

"We'll be out in the morning and the afternoon and probably sometimes in the evening doing home smoke alarm checks," says Woods. "We will be knocking on doors, asking for permission to come in and take a look at their smoke alarms. What we want to know is are they in the right place? Are they under ten years old and are they working?"

"Once a month check them, replace the batteries twice a year -- generally when we change the clocks forward and backward we say change the battery. The battery may be good for something else, a toy or anything else you have a 9 volt battery use for, but we want to have them fresh and working in the case of a fire."

Woods says a working smoke alarm can give you a 50 percent higher chance of surviving in a fire.

"The common things that I find is that people don't know that inner connected smoke alarms that are connected to the electricity and have a battery backup -- some do, some don't -- that they also have to be replaced every ten years."

Woods says when it comes to cooking, residents should always 'look while they cook' and ensure they are always around the stove we it's on to prevent fires as well.

Each night this week, Woodstock Fire is partnering with a different local pizza place and when you order a pizza, the fire truck may follow you to deliver the pizza and if you have a working smoke alarm, the pizza is on them.
