It's that time of year, flu season! Oxford County Public Health Flu Shot Clinics run until Nov 12th.
OXFORD COUNTY - It's that time of year again and no it's not Halloween or Christmas. It's flu season!
Typically the virus starts emerging around October and lasts until around May. Oxford County Public Health is taken steps to ensure you don't fall victim to the respiratory illness that causes symptoms such as coughing, fatigue, fever. It has the potential to develop pneumonia if not treated.
Flu clinics are being set up Oxford County. The first clinic is being held today at the Oxford Auditorium fairgrounds from 3 - 7 p.m. "Flu clinics begin on October 27th and run until Wednesday November 12th," said Supervisor of Health Protection, Joanne Andrews. "We have various clinics throughout the County to enable people to get to a flu clinic this year."
Over 20 thousand Canadians visited the hospital last year to be treated for the flu. Andrews says you can take steps to avoid being one of those 20,000. "The flu shot is the best protection against the flu virus...typically we see cases of flu in December or January."
Depending on when you recieve your flu shot can dictate whether or not you get the flu. "We know that it takes about two weeks to build immunity to the flu so you may have actually be exposed or begun developing the virus before your body has built enough immunity to it," said Andrews. The sooner you get the shot the sooner you're protected.
The flu shot is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months, especially for pregnant women, young children, seniors and people with weak immune systems.
