Oxford OPP are reminding motorists to slow down turn on your lights when the fog gets really bad.
It was 16 years ago today that dense fog claimed the lives of 8 people in a massive 87 car collision on the 401. The fiery crash happened on September 3, 1999 on the 401 in Essex County where 8 people died and another 45 were injured in the massive pileup.
Sergeant Dave Rektor tells Heart FM with this in mind the Oxford OPP are telling motorists to be mindful of dense fog.
"Well this time of year, particularly in the early fall when you have warm days and cool nights it can create patchy fog or what is known as ground fog and it can be very dense and create visibility issues. When this happens make sure you have your lights on, windshield washer reservoir is full and your wipers are in good condition and keep them going, allow extra distance between vehicles, reduce your speed well below the posted speed limit, when the fog is really bad we would recommend pulling off the road completely at a safe distance and activating your 4 way lights and waiting for the fog to clear up."
Rektor says drivers need to slow down and be careful when you experience dense fog, especially when it creates zero visibility.
