French Fly Flag Over Woodstock

French Catholic students raise their flag in Museum Square

The Franco-Ontario flag is flying high in Museum Square today.

Woodstock's Francophone community, led by hundreds of students from the city's two French Catholic Schools raised their flag this morning.

It's in recognition of Franco-Ontarian Day, celebrated by over 600,000 Francophones across the province.

The kids were in full spirit, singing, dancing and forming a giant conga line throughout the Square.

Principal of Ste. Marguerite Bourgeoys and Notre Dame, Nicole Plante-Cooper says the students are having fun, but also understand the importance of the event.  "Today we are flying our flag and that today is a celebration of the creation of our Franco-Ontarian flag.  All the songs that we sing and everything...it's very cultural and identifying to our culture.  The kids are used to seeing it, and they've been prepared for it and they get a kick out of it actually."

School Board Superintendent, Paul Levac was in attendance, telling Heart FM the Francophone population of Woodstock is one of the fastest growing in the region.  "We have 29 school, 9000 students, with St. Marguerite Bourgeoys and Ecole Notre Dame being among our fastest growing schools in our board.  We're very proud of the fact that we're part of the community of Woodstock."
