A new elementary school broke ground Friday and South Ridge celebrated a Construction Kick-off
TILLSONBURG - A new elementary school in Tillsonburg held it's official ground breaking Friday.
The yet to be named school will be 56 thousand square feet and house and accommodate up to 602 students.
Vice Chair of the Thames Valley School Board Graham Hart says the new school will accommodate students from Rolph Street, Maple Lane and Annandale public schools.
"With the steel structure already up, the expectation is that with a decent winter this year for construction it will be open for September 2015."
"The need really is because Rolph Street was over 100 years old, couldn't be made wheelchair accessible and secondly, the students are now coming from the suburbs so we needed to locate the school where the students are living."
South Ridge Public School in Tillsonburg also held a construction kick-off Friday as they prepare to expand.
"At South Ridge there are a number of portables at the present time so we are building an addition on South Ridge to accommodate the students who are presently in portables and secondly we are making it a K to 8 school where it's presently K-6 now so the students who were going to Annandale for grade 7 and 8 will now stay at South Ridge."
Construction there is also expected to be complete for September 2015.
