The Woodstock Police have laid charges against a youth after a hate-motivated assault in the city.
WOODSTOCK - A youth is facing charges after a hate-motivated assault in Woodstock.
Police were called to a disturbance yesterday at 11:35 a.m. in the area of Turtle Island School on Knights Lane. Through the investigation, it was determined that a young person unprovokedly assaulted an elderly person on the sidewalk, and it was based on their ethnicity, while yelling racially charged comments and obscenities. The victim did not suffer physical injuries.
As a result, the youth was charged with assault, uttering threats to cause death or harm, and criminal harassment using threatening conduct. They have been held in custody pending a bail hearing. The name of the youth will not be released as it is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police say they are aware of videos of the incident circulating around social media, and they are asking anyone who might have relevant footage to hand it over to the police. You can click here to submit any video footage you have.
