WOODSTOCK - The second Federal Budget from the Liberal Government could have some positive aspects for Oxford County.
Warden David Mayberry says he was happy to see a strong investment in infrastructure and more money for affordable housing.
"I was happy to see some money being spent on infrastructure, particularly green infrastructure, everybody has a need for more infrastructure or at least a need to rebuild infrastructure. The one area that does look positive is affordable housing and they will be putting a little over $1 billion dollars every year into affordable housing. If you look at Oxford's history, it generally tries to leverage that money with some money of it's own, last year we provided about $.50 cents for every dollar we got from local levels of government so we could get more affordable housing done."
He was also happy to see some money for green energy investments.
"I was happy to see $120 million dollars for electric vehicle new charging stations, Oxford has a plan to provide stations all over the county and we would be interested to see if we will be eligible for that."
Mayberry says to be honest he was happy with a lot of the items in the budget, however he is very worried about how we are going to pay for it.
"I guess I'm concerned when I see that we will be looking at somewhere between a 25 and 30 billion deficit and that to me is a real concern. I'm not one that likes to put debt onto the next generation, the one thing that was missing in the budget was how are we going to pay for all of these things. Now while I am actually in support of a lot of what's in there, I think that these things come with a cost and we need to be able to figure out how we are going to pay for them."
