In Flanders Field the Poppies Blow

The Royal Canadian Legion will start selling poppies this Friday in Woodstock. The Mayor has already made the official proclamation.

WOODSTOCK - You will start seeing poppies everywhere in the City of Woodstock on Friday.

Mayor Trevor Birtch has made the official proclamation for Remembrance Day poppies to be sold in the Friendly City. Here is a copy of the proclamation:

WHEREAS the poppy is an international symbol for those who died in war; and

WHEREAS during the First World War, the scarlet poppy quickly became the symbol for soldiers who died in battle; and

WHEREAS in November 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada with the tradition continuing today thanks to millions of Canadians who wear the flower each November keeping alive the memory of those countrymen who died in battle; and WHEREAS on November 11, 1927 Armistice Day was celebrated for the first time in Woodstock with six volunteers and the local police bringing all traffic to a standstill for 2 minutes of silence.

THEREFORE be it resolved that I, Mayor Trevor Birtch, proclaim October 31 through November 11, 2020 for the distribution of:

“REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES”

in the city of Woodstock. Dated this 27th day of October, 2020 at Woodstock, Ontario.

The money from poppy sales goes to support any veteran going through hard times. It also goes to help support the dependents of veterans for things like post secondary education with bursaries. The Royal Canadian Legion in Woodstock also donates money to the Woodstock Hospital, Sakura House, Meals on Wheels, Parkwood Hospital and Veterans Hospitals in London and surrounding area.
