Interview With Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock

Dr. Joyce Lock joined Heart FM to talk about not going the cottage, hugging your mother for Mothers Day, the thresholds we need to hit to reopen the economy and how long it might take to develop a vaccine.

OXFORD COUNTY - The Medical Officer of Health for Southwestern Public Health joined Heart FM today for her weekly chat.

In the interview she discusses the following:

- The Southwestern Public Board of Health Meeting on Thursday where they talked about the need for social distancing measures and guidelines to stay in place for awhile.

- Dr. Lock talked about the testing we are doing in the region, testing everyone in Long Term Care homes and responded to comments from the Premier this week about some health units not testing enough.

- She encourages people to not visit their vacation homes or cottages right now.

- Advice for people who may be going to Garden Centre or Hardware stores this weekend.

- The thresholds we need to hit to start the next phase of reopening the economy. Looking for specific targets and watching the percentage increase of new cases daily. Dr. Lock is hopeful kids will get to go to the playground this summer.

- Advice for Mother's Day. If your mom is younger and healthy and you both haven't come into contact with someone who has COVID, go ahead and give her a big bear hug. If your mom is elderly, it's probably not a good idea.

- Advice for kids who are nervous about the virus and for parents on how to talk to them, sometimes just listening is good enough and try to get them into a routine as best you can.

- Dr. Lock says the smartest and brightest people are working around the globe to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, that said it still could take a year or two to develop.
