Keeping Kids Safe

The Oxford County Injury Prevention team were promoting safe cycling at the Springbank Ave Public school today.

Team members were visiting schools to hand out reflectors that can be worn at dusk and dawn to increase visibility while cycling or walking. Public Health Nurse Kelly Vanderhoeven tells Heart FM they have really gotten some great feedback from the kids.

"Kids are loving these reflective zipper pulls and armbands, they are lining up for them, they absolutely can't wait to get out and be seen."

The Injury Prevention team also handed out the reflective gear in Ingersoll yesterday and tomorrow they will be in Tillsonburg at the Annandale School.

Ways to be seen include:

- Wear bright coloured clothing.
- If walking or riding at dusk or night, wear retro-reflective strips on clothing
- While cycling, ensure you have a white light on the front of your bike and a red light on the rear.
- When approaching an intersection, wait for your turn. Watch for vehicles signalling to turn right.
- Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Avoid riding in the blind spot of cars or trucks.
