Less Locations with Crossing Guards this School Year

Mill Steet and Albert Street, Simcoe Street and Brock Street, and Parkinson Road and Fergus Drive will no longer have crossing guards.

WOODSTOCK - Staffing shortages have caused three crossing guard locations to be closed for the upcoming school year.

Mill Steet and Albert Street, Simcoe Street and Brock Street, and Parkinson Road and Fergus Drive, were all chosen to lose their guards based on nearby traffic lights and pedestrian crosswalks that can help students cross safely.

Sunayana Katikapalli, Deputy Clerk for the City of Woodstock says that the current labour market, retirement of several former crossing guards, and growing demand for the service are all contributing to the problem.

“We just don’t have enough guards to ensure we can reliably deliver the same level of service without cutting back the number of locations.”

The city is developing resources to share with the schools, including maps showing alternate routes and videos on how to safely cross streets using the traffic infrastructure.
