Prime Minister Mark Carney says the budget builds a stronger Canada, while the opposition leaders say it falls short.
OTTAWA - The federal government's latest budget includes $142 billion in new spending.
It included a new tax filing deadline of May 15th for all taxpayer starting in 2028. There's also a new tax exemption on up to $15 million in capital gains and it enhances the small business rollover of taxes when capital gains are reinvested in another Canadian small business.
The Liberals are also expecting a deficit of $62.3 billion in this fiscal year, about $3 billion lower than the projections provided during the spring economic update in April.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says this budget will build a stronger, more united Canada where we are all free to live as we choose, adding we are the masters of our own destiny.
However, NDP Leader Avi Lewis says the budget fails to meet the actual needs of Canadians, and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will move a motion to reject the budget, with the top issue being riding debt costs.
You can view the full budget online here, and the Liberals will fan out across the country to promote it today.
We are masters of our destiny. Budget 2026 is our plan to build a stronger, more united Canada where we are all free to live as we choose. https://t.co/a7yl82aNB0

Mastered by debt. You will pay more for Carney’s costly credit card budget. Conservatives fight to save you money: https://t.co/ycYUainYpY https://t.co/c8fLp10yfQ

If you're a billionaire, this budget is Christmas come early. Canadians are struggling with the cost of everything — groceries, rent, medication, and everything in between. But this budget only makes it easier for the same corporations fuelling the crisis to profit even more. https://t.co/AxV2iiOM0A
