United Way Student Stair Climb Returns Today

The school that raised the most funds for United Way will be presented with a trophy.

WOODSTOCK - School spirit will be alive and well at the Reeves Community Complex today.

United Way Oxford will be hosting the annual Student Stair Climb this morning, which will put all of the local high schools against each other for a good cause.

The buses should arrive around 9:00 a.m. and Resource Development Coordinator Megan Porter says they have lots of fun in store for the local youth.

"We'll play some games on the ice and we'll also walk a full lap of the arena. So each school will sit, share their school spirit, and cheer on their team while they're participating on the ice before we do the actual stair climb."

A trophy will be awarded to the school that raises the most amount of money in the end. The event raised over $40,000 last year alone and Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute (IDCI) was the top fundraiser with $14,000.

The Meridian Credit Union has been a big supporter of this event for the past 11 years now. Steve Halyk, the local branch manager for Woodstock, says they offer their own prize as well.

"What Meridian does is actually gives a prize to the top fundraiser. It's not just $20, but usually the the person who raises the most money will win a small cash prize from Meridian."

Each student must pledge at least $20 in order to participate in the event.

The United Way Student Stair Climb first started in 2004 and it has raised over $519,000 since then. IDCI has won the trophy every single year except for 2018, when Woodstock Collegiate Institute (WCI) raised the most funds.

Heart FM will be on site for today's event and will update this article when the final results are in.
