New resources are available at Oxford County Libraries to help authors turn their writings into e-books.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford County Library now offers three new resources to help aspiring authors pursue their passion.
Writers with an Oxford library card can upload their finished work to PressBook. Each story on PressBook will be converted into an ebook. People will learn how to make their own cover page, author's notes, and table of contents. PressBook will also show authors how to divide their story into chapters.
Once the ebook is ready it can be uploaded to SELF-E. There the Library Journal will look at all the different works and will choose which ones become a "SELF-E Select Title" and get posted to Biblioboard. There it can be read by not only readers in Oxford County, but anyone with a Biblioboard membership in Canada.
Systems Support Librarian Sarah McDonald says this is a great way for authors to get discovered.
"They actually have had writers who have submitted their works to SELF-E get contacted by some of our big publishers and offered publishing contracts."
In honour of these resources the Oxford County Library has also launched a writing contest for authors over the age of 13.
McDonald tells Heart FM about the contest, which highlights the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
"We're encouraging our patrons to take the themes of Frankenstein, maybe a creation turned monstrous - it doesn't necessarily have to be scary. We're asking that the submissions are between 1,000 and 2,000 words and the deadline for submissions is October 31st."
You also must have an Oxford County Library card in order to enter.
You can find more information about PressBook, SELF-E, Biblioboard, and the Frankenstein Writing Contest on the Oxford County Library website.
