A barbecue fundraiser will be happening for the Youth 16 U-18 Junior Dragon Boat team tomorrow, supporting the team as they head to Thailand for the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in August.
INGERSOLL - The Youth 16 U-18 Junior Dragon Boat team is holding a fundraiser tomorrow.
The barbecue will raise money to help pay for their trip to Thailand, where they'll represent Canada in the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships.
Gillian Borland is among the parents who organized this event. She says they'll be competing against several countries from around the world.
"The kids are pumped. I think the closer we get, the more excited they definitely get. This is a huge opportunity and a reality for them that they're going halfway across the world to represent Canada on the global stage, in a sport that not a lot of people are aware of or know a lot about."
Borland and of some of the children's parents formed a group to help put on these kinds of events to help pay for the trip, as the cost, along with equipment, is high.
She says this is one of multiple initiatives they'll be doing to raise money.
"There'll be hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, water and pop to be purchased, so you can come have your lunch and do your grocery shopping at the same time. And if anybody wants to make a further donation than that, we'll certainly take those as well."
They will also be hosting another barbecue at Zehrs in Stratford on July 27th from 11:00am to 1:00pm, along with a bottle drive that is ongoing. If any one is interested in getting rid of their cooler cans, wine or beer bottles they may get in touch with Borland at 519-670-3538. She says they have also setup a GoFundMe page for the team.
The competition will be from August 20 to 25th.
The barbecue goes from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Tremblett's Independent in Ingersoll.
