A man from Tillsonburg is calling out Tim Hortons after he was falsely informed that he had won a $10,000 prepaid American Express card through the Roll Up the Rim contest.
TILLSONBURG - A man from Tillsonburg has hired legal representation after he was falsely informed that he had won a major prize through Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim.
Jeremy McDougall bought a coffee at the Tims on Broadway Monday morning. He rolled up his rim through the smartphone app once he got home, and was notified that he had won a $10,000 prepaid American Express card.
He decided to go back to the restaurant for confirmation.
"We walked in, showed her (the manager) the screenshot, she said congratulations, and the staff clapped so we turned around to walk out and they gave a big cheer and that was it. We came home to wait for the confirmation e-mail that we were told from the manager and the app that we would receive."
But that e-mail never came, McDougall tried to reach out to Tim Hortons several times, and finally got a response through Facebook.
"They had asked me for my information and my e-mail. Within a few minutes of giving that information to them, I had received an e-mail from Tim Hortons themselves that I didn't actually win $10,000 and it was a $50 Tim Hortons card for my compensation."
McDougall has no plans to use this gift card and he would like to know more about what happened behind the scenes.
"I think everybody is waiting for Tim Hortons to make some sort of statement other than we had a glitch. I would like them to define what the glitch was. Was it an error on their IT part? Was it an error in coding? Because that screen didn't come from nowhere it had to be put in their system."
He says this whole situation has really made him question not only just the virtual Roll Up the Rim contest, but other digital promotions as well.
"If no one says anything now about this, what is to stop any other companies doing any other digital contests from saying sorry you didn't actually win. How would you trust Tim Hortons next time? I would never do another digital promotion after this, so who is going to trust companies like Tim Hortons to be able to do digital things honestly."
We have reached out to Tim Hortons for comment.
