Prominent Community members help deliver food to Meals on Wheels recipients last week
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Meals on Wheels recipients got a surprise last week as their food was being delivered.
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch, along with Community Champions Leslie Farrell and Captain Greg Way as well as East Zorra Tavistock Mayor Don McKay volunteered as part of March for Meals to deliver meals to community members last week.
March for Meals is a North American event which takes place every year during the month of March, and promotes the challenge of seniors' nutrition and the role that Meals on Wheels plays in Oxford County to address this challenge.
Coordinator for Client Services at VON Kim Anderson says this is the sixth year local mayors have participated in the event.
"It's good to advocate on behalf of this program the importance of senior nutrition and having regular safety check-ins for clients and knowing that everyone is safe in the home. Sometimes it's the only person they see in a day."
Anderson says having prominent community members take part has many benefits.
"Not only is it exciting for the clients to see someone that they recognize from the community but it's just one of those events that gets the word out there on how important it is to have this program and having that familiar face for everyone out there in the community to see, it just draws that attention in."
Don McKay says for him, it was a reminder.
VON Oxford’s Meals on Wheels program offers seniors in our community home-style meals using traditional recipes, and accommodating dietary requirements. Hot meals are delivered in Woodstock Monday-Friday and in Tavistock every Tuesday and Thursday, while frozen meal orders can also be placed for biweekly delivery throughout Woodstock and surrounding area.
This is the sixth year local mayors have participated in the Mayors for Meals event.
